About Shrewsbury Town
One of the oldest Football League clubs in the West Midlands and Welsh Borders region — founded in 1886, home at Montgomery Waters Meadow since 1990.
The club
Shrewsbury Town Football Club was founded in 1886, making it one of the oldest Football League clubs in the West Midlands and Welsh Borders region. Based in the historic county town of Shrewsbury, the club has competed in the English Football League since 1950 and has spent the majority of its recent history in the third and fourth tiers of English football.
The Shrews' home ground, Montgomery Waters Meadow — affectionately known as "the Meadow" — sits on the banks of the River Severn on the outskirts of the town. The ground opened in 1990 after the club relocated from its former home, Gay Meadow, which had served as their home for nearly 97 years.
History & honours
Shrewsbury Town's greatest achievement came in 1979 when the club was promoted to the Second Division — the second tier of English football at the time — under manager Graham Turner. The club also won the Football League Third Division title in 1979 and again in 1994.
In the modern era, Shrewsbury have twice secured League One status and earned national attention with FA Cup runs against Premier League opposition, including memorable victories in front of packed home crowds.
The community
The club has a deep connection to the town and county of Shropshire. Through Shrewsbury Town Foundation and various community programmes, the club reaches thousands of young people and families across the region every year.
