From the Archive - An Inspired Comeback at Meadow Lane

If there’s one thing that matches between Salop and Notts County have delivered over the years, it’s goals.

Six of our last seven encounters have seen four or more goals scored, and for today's From the Archive, we’re revisiting an inspired Salop fightback from the 2013/14 season.

When we met at Meadow Lane in February 2014, just one point separated the team.

It was the hosts who started the brightest, with future England star and Premier League winner Jack Grealish getting the faintest of touches to knock the ball past Joe Anyon from an Alan Sheehan cross in the eighth minute.

Things would go from bad to worse for Town when Grealish was dragged down by Tamika Mkandawire in the area, leaving the ref with no choice but to point to the spot.

Sheehan stepped up and coolly slotted the ball past Anyon to make it 2-0 after 13 minutes.

Salop would reduce the deficit in the 33rd minute, with Jon Taylor smashing past Bartosz Bialkowski.

The game’s pivotal moment came eleven minutes later. Notts striker James Spencer was given a straight red for a dangerous elbow on Connor Goldson.

Town seized the opportunity in the second half, going right at the hosts from the whistle. Asa Hall came close just minutes into the half, firing narrowly wide after some neat build-up play.

Our perseverance was rewarded in the 66th minute, with Jon Taylor cleverly chipping Bialkowski to level the score.

Just four minutes later, Dave McAllister grabbed the winner.

A defensive mix-up from the hosts allowed the midfielder to poke home a scrappy goal, finally giving Salop fans something to cheer after an eight game winless run.
