Match Preview
It’s time for some FA Cup action this weekend as Salop make the long trip north to take on National League North leaders South Shields.
Let’s take a look at everything we need to know about our opponents ahead of Sunday’s midday kick-off.
Key Players
Striker Paul Blackett has been instrumental in South Shields' title challenge so far this season. The 27-year-old has scored nine goals in 13 league matches and comes into Sunday’s game in a rich vein of form.
He has scored seven in his last seven in all competitions, including a brace in their final FA Cup qualifying match against Spalding United.
Former Carlisle frontman Cedwyn Scott has also settled into his new home well, scoring six goals for the Mariners since joining in the summer.
The Manager
Ian Watson is the man responsible for South Shields’ early-season success. He was appointed manager at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, marking his first full-time managerial role.
Before being appointed at the 1st Cloud Arena, he was assistant manager for Mike Williamson at Gateshead, MK Dons and Carlisle.
Form
South Shields come into Sunday’s game on the back of a very strong start to the season. The Mariners are currently top of the National League North, level on points with AFC Fylde but with a game in hand.
Much of their early-season success has come from their impressive defensive record, with the team shipping just six goals in their first 13 league games. They are also unbeaten at home since March.
However, Ian Watson will find himself in a new situation this weekend, as they will come into the game having suffered their first loss of the season last weekend, a 1-0 defeat away at Macclesfield.
Head-to-Head Record
Sunday’s match will be our first-ever competitive encounter with South Shields.
