Shrewsbury exited the Carabao Cup in the first round after falling to a 3-1 defeat at Grimsby.

Goals from Justin Amaluzor, Cameron Gardner and Jaze Kabia won it for the hosts - with Tom Sang grabbing Town's consolation.

Team news:

Boss Appleton opted to make seven changes from the team that travelled to Tranmere on Saturday.

One of those changes saw Elyh Harrison make his Town debut in goal with Toto Nsiala, Mal Benning, Sang, Taylor Perry, Callum Stewart and George Lloyd also making their first starts of the season.

It meant Salop remained in a 3-5-2 formation with Nurse, Nsiala and Anderson making up the back three.

Hoole and Benning operated at wing-back with Sam Clucas joined by Sang and Perry in the middle of the park. Stewart and Lloyd were the front two.

Grimsby lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Gardner the central striker and Darragh Burns and Amaluzor out wide.

Report:

It was Grimsby who started the game on the front foot with David Artell's side opening the scoring in the 15th minute.

It came from Town trying to do the right thing, but what looked to be a clever ball to Sang from Perry was cut out.

And that led to the ball being worked to Amaluzor who emphatically fired past Harrison from inside the box.

The hosts came close to a second shortly after with Harrison making an excellent stop to get down and keep out an effort from Geza Turi.

Grimsby were given a fortunate penalty in the 26th minute when Burns struck a speculative effort from distance that hit the arm of Perry.

Referee Seb Stocksbridge pointed to the spot. But debutant Harrison made an excellent save to get down and parry away Jamie Walker's spot-kick.

Town responded with Sang firing over from distance.

The former Port Vale man then saw a free-kick well saved by Christy Pym in the Grimsby goal.

Grimsby made it 2-0 shortly after the restart with Warren sending in a cross that Gardner turned in from close range.

Town pulled a goal back just past the hour mark.

Hoole delivered in a deep cross that Benning sent back into the danger area. And Sang was there to guide the ball home.

Appleton made a double change shortly after with Anthony Scully and John Marquis replacing Clucas and Stewart.

Tommy McDermott - fresh after arriving from Burnley yesterday - and Alex Gilliead then entered the fray.

But Grimsby grabbed a third late on when Warrne was tripped in the box, resulting in another penalty.

And this time, Kabia made no mistake from 12 yards.

Town came a whisker away from pulling another goal back.

Benning whipped in a cross which Lloyd met with a powerful header. But from point-blank range, Pym - somehow - managed to keep the ball out.
