Ten-man Shrewsbury fell to defeat at home to Colchester.

Goals from Samson Tovide and Kyreece Lisbie saw the U's claim victory at the Croud Meadow.

Salop were the better team in the first half. But Tovide put the visitors ahead shortly after the interval.

And after Tommy McDermott picked up a red card, Colchester grabbed a late second through Lisbie.

Team news:

Boss Appleton stuck with a 3-5-2 formation for the visit of Danny Cowley's side.

It saw Elyh Harrison start in goal with Will Boyle, Tom Anderson and Sam Stubbs making up the back three.

Luca Hoole started at right wing-back with Sam Clucas moving out to the left-hand side.

In midfield, Harrison Biggins and Taylor Perry were joined by new recruit McDermott - who made his first start for the club.

Up front, John Marquis was partnered by George Lloyd.

Colchester lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Tovide the loan striker.

Jack Payne operated just behind in the number 10 role with Owura Edwards and John-Kymani Gordon out wide.

Report:

Town started the game brightly with Appleton's men consistently getting into good positions in the opening 20 minutes.

And that spell almost ended with McDermott opening the scoring - with the Burnley loanee firing over from just outside the box following good work from Perry and Clucas.

Colchester responded with Arthur Read fizzing an effort wide from 20 yards.

Town threatened again just past the half-hour mark.

Clucas and McDermott combined well to send Marquis charging towards goal.

And he then beat his man before entering the box and seeing a shot deflect wide.

Town continued to press for an opener from that point.

Hoole whipped in a cross that Clucas looked destined to turn in at the back post.

Rob Hunt, though, produced an excellent bit of defending to nip in and turn the ball behind for a corner.

And from that corner, Salop went close again with Boyle seeing a header parried away by keeper Matt Macey.

Colchester then showed they carried an attacking threat with Payne curling a strike just past the post.

But it was Salop who ended the half on top with Clucas and Perry both whipping in some really dangerous crosses.

Colchester did have the ball in the net shortly after the restart - with Tovide turning in from close range.

The forward was comfortably offside, though, with the linesman duly raising his flag.

But just before the hour mark, Tovide did get on the scoring with the striker doing really well to collect Payne's pass, beat his marker and then slip the ball into the corner.

To make matters worse for Salop, McDermott was then given his marching orders for a late challenge on Bishop.

Colchester made it 2-0 in the 84th minute - with Lisbie latching onto the ball before converting.
