Match Report
Shrewsbury Town secured their place in the third round of the FA Cup with a late win over Sutton United.
After the crossbar was rattled three times by the two sides, Kai Jennings curled home directly from a corner kick to open the scoring with just over 20 minutes left to play.
And it looked like Shrewsbury were heading out until Ismeal Kabia bent a beauty into the top right-hand corner at the start of added time.
In extra time, Salop took the lead after just a few seconds as John Marquis capitalised on a defensive mistake and slotted home what proved to be the winning goal.
An entertaining game also saw three red cards dished out at The VBS Community Stadium.
Team news:
Michael Appleton named an unchanged starting XI for the third game in a row for today's clash.
Will Brook continued in goal with Sam Clucas, Boyle, Sam Stubbs, Tom Anderson and Luca Hoole in defence.
A midfield two of Isaac England and Josh Ruffels sat just behind Anthony Scully and Kabia.
George Lloyd was the lone striker.
The hosts lined up with top goalscorer Lewis Simper in central midfield, while Ashley Nadesan led the line.
Report:
A scrappy opening saw three yellow cards dished out in the first 12 minutes, including one for David Ogbonna on Kabia that could've warranted a more severe punishment.
Few chances came to pass in the early stages, although Brook was forced into one outstanding save to prevent Clucas from heading his own side a goal down.
The young goalkeeper reacted very smartly to palm Clucas' misguided effort clear of danger in the 18th minute.
Sutton, who had started brightest, carved out their own chance moments later, but Kai Jennings couldn't quite keep his free-kick inside the upright.
The next action of the game also fell for the hosts, but it took until the stroke of half-time to come.
Simper lofted the ball over the top to Jayden Harris, who struck the crossbar from the edge of the box.
Appleton sent his side out for the second half with a new lease of life, and they had two great chances to take the lead within as many second-half minutes.
First, straight from kick-off, Scully set Kabia loose down the right wing, and the Arsenal loanee delivered a cross.
Boyle collected the ball on the edge of the box, where he was subsequently fouled.
Scully stepped up to take the free-kick, but his effort was well saved by Jack Sims.
Seconds later, Salop struck the crossbar as Boyle's hooked shot left Sims stranded.
The hosts responded with Simper striking the bar at the other end shortly after.
Brook was then called into action to quickly smother the ball at Harris' feet and prevent the hosts from taking the lead, all within an action-packed opening seven minutes of the second half.
Salop continued to brighten up as the hour-mark approached, and Sims was forced to make three saves in a minute to deny Kabia and Scully twice.
With a little over 20 minutes to play, the deadlock was broken by the hosts, as Jennings curled a corner kick straight into the back of the net.
And things went from bad to worse for Town as Ruffels received his marching orders for a second bookable offence ten minutes later.
Kabia continued to look lively for Shrewsbury, and the young forward forced an unbelievable save from Sims with an effort that looked destined for the top corner.
As the board went up to show nine minutes of added time, Salop finally got off the mark.
Kabia replicated exactly what he'd done moments before, except Sims couldn't get near this one, and his beautiful effort bent into the side netting to rescue a lifeline for his side.
With the score levelled up, as was the playing field. In the 94th minute, Ogbonna also received his second yellow card, making it 10v10 for extra time.
Town would only need a few seconds of extra time to take the lead, as Marquis did well to cut out a loose pass and slot the ball home with composure.
It should've been three within ten minutes as a long ball found Chuks Aneke, who had beaten the offside trap.
With Marquis providing an option, Aneke took aim, but his effort trickled narrowly wide of the post.
As the second half of extra time got under way, the field was reduced to nine vs 10 as Junior Eccleston was dismissed for elbowing Aneke.
And Town had the ball in the back of the net from the resulting free-kick as Anderson headed home, but Marquis was adjudged to be in an offside position, and the goal was ruled out.
But it mattered not as Appleton's side held on and secured a place in the next round of the competition.
