Match Report
Shrewsbury Town exited the FA Cup at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
A Jorgen Strand Larsen hattrick, as well as goals from Jhon Arias, Rodrigo Gomes and Tolu Arokodare, saw the Premier League outfit run out 6-1 winners at Molineux.
John Marquis netted a first-half penalty to give Town a bit of hope at 2-1 down, but the top division quality shone out.
Team news:
Boss Appleton opted for a 3-4-2-1 formation for the trip to Molineux.
It saw Elyh Harrison get the nod in the goal with Luca Hoole, Tom Anderson and Will Boyle making up the back three.
Former Wolves youngster Taylor Perry sat in midfield alongside Josh Ruffels with Ismeal Kabia at right wing-back and Sam Clucas on the left.
Marquis and Tommy McDermott both operated as 10s with Iwan Morgan making his debut up front. Fellow new recruit Trey Ogunsuyi was on the subs bench.
Wolves field a team packed with internationals.
Lining up in a 3-5-2 system, Strand Larsen and Hee-Chan Hwang led the line.
Report:
The Premier League side started incredibly quickly and took the lead with just nine minutes on the clock.
Hwang broke behind the Town defence and, when faced with the onrushing Harrison, dinked the ball across the face of goal to his strike partner, Stand Larsen, with the Norwegian international able to flick the ball into an empty net.
Arias made it two in the 12th minute, latching on to Strand Larsen's through-ball and sliding the ball into the bottom corner calmly.
However, Michael Appleton's side kept pushing and Marquis had a goal back 15 minutes later.
Town's captain collected the ball and powered towards the edge of the area where he was met by Arias.
The Colombian dived in, hacking Marquis to the ground.
And the experienced striker stepped up to coolly convert from the spot with 26 minutes on the clock.
Shrewsbury looked to be heading into the break with a decent performance on show and chasing a single goal.
But things were made tougher when Harrison's mistake was capitalised on by Strand Larsen, who rolled it into an empty net to make it 3-1 at half-time.
Both sides continued to push for goals as the second half got under way.
And Clucas could've halved the deficit if it weren't for Santiago Bueno's goalline clearance denying his low drive from the corner of the six-yard box.
It didn't take long for the Premier League side to extend their lead and Strand Larsen curled home just before the hour mark to secure his hattrick.
The next action saw Harrison pull off a stunning save to deny the Norwegian his fourth of the day, making himself big and showing good reflexes to deny the striker's header from four yards.
With 15 minutes remaining, third-year scholar Jack Loughran and new signing Trey Ogunsuyi entered the fray, joining Marquis in attack.
But with just a few minutes left, Rodrigo Gomes got on the scoresheet, netting from inside the six-yard box to make it five.
And it was six in added time when Arokodare tapped home from close range to round off the day.
