Pre-Swindon | Matt Cox
Goalkeeper Matt Cox spoke to the press ahead of tomorrow's match against Swindon.
Speaking to BBC Shropshire, Cox said how much he's enjoying his time at Salop so far.
He also discussed his career at Brentford so far, playing for England's youth setup and his aspirations.
Read what Matt had to say below...
On settling in at Shrewsbury:
"It's nice. It's a great set-up, great club. I'm enjoying myself. The fanbase is great, it's a really nice area so I've settled in well.
"I was hoping to get out on loan this season. Everyone becomes a football to play league games and to play in front of fans.
"You want to play in games that mean something. That is the dream at the end of the day so I'm really happy to be here and now I want to give my best for the team and help the team. I'm enjoying it a lot."
On previous loans at Bristol Rovers and Crawley:
"It's an amazing feeling walking out the tunnel and seeing fans who care so passionately about their football club.
"You feel the atmosphere. There is nothing like it.
"Being here, you can tell this club means absolutely everything to Shrewsbury supporters.
"I've missed playing in front of fans like that a lot. It's great to be back out there."
On his performances so far:
"I'm fairly happy with how I've done so far.
"I was disappointed not to keep a clean sheet at Cambridge - with that trickly penalty.
"But I think we are really building here as a team.
"I just want to give my all, as long as I'm helping the team pick up results and points along the way then I'm happy."
On working with Will Brook:
"Will is a good lad. We get on well. It's nice to have someone a similar age to me.
"We understand each other because we have come from similar backgrounds.
"I enjoy working with him. It's good."
On getting a big three points against Barrow:
"At this stage of the season, where we are in the table - every game is a big game.
"It doesn't really matter where the other team is in the table - every match is crucual.
"That said, it's always nice to pick up a win against a team in a similar position because it feels that bit sweeter.
"It was good to get that win. But the last few games have been pretty solid at home so hopefully we can make this a tough place to come and start picking up points consistently."
On life at Brentford:
"It's a really good club. I think the whole way the club is run is really nice - from bottom to top.
"There are no big egos there. There is a real togetherness throughout the club, with the staff, with the players. I've never really seen that before. It's second to none.
"Hopefully, I will be able to bring what I learnt there to Shrewsbury to help us grow as a team.
"They are flying high in the Premier League.
"Until you zoom out, you don't realise how well you are doing because, in the building, everyone is just looking at the next game. The next day in.
"You don't get too far ahead of yourself.
"They are just taking things one game at a time which I think is a big reason they are where they are.
"It's very important not to get too ahead of yourself as a team, especially in the Premier League because every match is so difficult."
On being on the bench in the Premier League:
"That was a great experience. The first time I as on the bench was four years ago at Newcastle away.
"I remember 10 minutes in getting sent out to warm-up at St James' Park.
"Looking at the stands, I just thought 'wow, I'd love to play here.'
"I haven't managed to get on the pitch in the Premier League yet, but it was a great experience just being on the bench so many times for Brentford.
"I think that has helped me a lot, being that close but not getting there quiet yet."
On the feedback Brentford have given him:
"I speak to the first-team goalkeeper coaches at Brentford a lot.
"I talk to them about what's going on here and how I'm finding it.
"I've been keeping in good contact with them."
On knowing John Marquis and Luca Hoole from Bristol Rovers:
"Having people I already knew really helped me settle in.
"They know what I am like as a player and person - that helped me settle in but it can also help the team because they know about me as a player as well.
"That has definitely helped."
On fellow Brentford loanee Iwan Morgan:
"Iwan has been doing well. He is playing well and the fans have really taken to him.
"He has settled in well, it's his first loan, he is playing in the league for the first time but he looks confident.
"Hopefully, he can score a few goals for us and kick on."
On playing for England at youth level:
"Playing for England has helped me a lot.
"I've played in front of lots of fans. I played and won the under-19s Euros.
"That was a great experience, I played with some very, very, talented players.
"We had Carney Chukwuemeka who is at Dortmund now. We had Liam Delap at Chelsea. Dane Scarlett who is at Tottenham.
"We had big names throughout, it was a very gifted group of players.
"And we came a long way as a group. And it's great to see so many of them now playing in the Premier League.
"It shows there is a pathway and it is possible.
"And it helps me to be able to build this character and play with real pressure.
"My aspiration is obviously to be Brentford's number one in the future.
"But my only target at the minute is to do as best as I can for Shrewsbury.
"I will give everything I've got to help us finish as high as we can up the table."
