Report | Crewe 3-1 Under-17s

Shrewsbury Town Under-17s exited the PDL Cup in the round of 16 stage following a loss at Crewe today.

Crewe opened the scoring early through their attacking midfielder in the 11th minute.

And they doubled their lead in the 26th minute when a ball over the top found the striker, who finished into the top left corner.

The attacking midfielder has his second and Crewe’s third before the half-hour mark, finishing off a counterattack to make Shrewsbury’s uphill task even more difficult.

Salop did have opportunities before the break, notably when Haydn Lewis hit the bar directly from a corner. Overall, though, the first half was scrappy and disjointed for Town.

The under-17s started the second half strongly. Will Gray scored their first goal in the 48th minute after Jeval Thompson-McKenzie played a ball across the box, which the keeper deflected into Gray’s path.

Thompson-McKenzie later forced a save onto the crossbar, and Kyasha Kameni and Lewis also had chances but failed to convert.

Ollie Hall had an excellent second half, clearing two balls off the line to keep the deficit from growing.

However, despite being the better side after the break, Shrewsbury’s poor start proved costly, and the match ended 3-1, knocking Salop out of the PDL Cup.

Line-up: Fletcher, Chaffatt, Houlston, Lewis, Hall, Falding, Fallon, Gray, Thompson-McKenzie, Tait, Aiston

Bench: Kameni, Leon, Stretton, Donnelly
