Youth Development Week | Isaac England

To kick off Youth Development Week, we're looking back on the progress made by Isaac England since Michael Appleton took over at Shrewsbury Town.

The young midfielder joined the club aged just five and is now a regular member of Town's first team squad at just 17 years old.

Isaac was first involved with the club in our pre-academy when he was five years old, before officially joining the club aged eight.

Isaac was part of both the under-14s team that won the Oakham Tournament at the start of the 2021/22 campaign and the under-15s side that reached the final of the Floodlit Cup in 2023.

His age group achieved yet another accolade last year when they won their under-16s league title.

Since achieving his scholarship, Isaac played a crucial role in our under-17s reaching the final of the Professional Development League Trophy and winning the tournament in Cardiff back in May.

He made his first team debut away at Northampton in April 2025, coming on in the 80th minute at Sixfields.

Academy manager, Charlie Musselwhite, said:

"Isaac's first involvement with us was back when he started going through the pre-academy at the age of five.

"He then got officially signed when he was eight and it was a nice moment yesterday because he was in my first ever age group at the club.

"He's progressed really well through our phases and we're very proud of Isaac.

"It should be a very proud moment for him, his family and everyone else involved.

"Hopefully there are many more like it to come for both him and some of our other scholars.

"It's a great showing of the club and the pathway we've got here."

Isaac made one more appearance for Town two weeks later, featuring in our season-closer against Crawley Town.

Pre-season proved key for the midfielder. He continued from where he left off, working with the first team full-time as the side prepared for the 2025/26 campaign.

The 17-year-old featured in five of Town's six pre-season games.

He also found the back of the net against Leamington.

Off the back of his productive summer, Isaac signed his first professional contract on August 4.

Since putting pen to paper, the 17-year-old has played five games, starting three.

His composure on the ball and footballing intelligence have made the young midfielder stand out.

“A lot of people tend to notice what they can't do, whereas I try and look at what they can do, what they can bring to the group,” Appleton said about England. “I mentioned that he brings calmness on the ball, which is a very good attribute to have.

“He's a good passer of the ball, but it's not the fact that he's a good passer of the ball. What he wants to do is pass the ball forward, which is key. That's a big thing for me as a midfield player as well.

“We'll try and help him in developing the stuff that he's not great at. But we won't spend too much time doing that.

“We'll spend a lot of time working on the stuff that he's really good at and make sure that he excels at what he's good at.

“I want him to pass the ball forward quicker and earlier.

“I just want him to do it a little bit quicker and earlier, because if he does it a little bit quicker and earlier, he won't be here very long. He'll be playing in the Championship.

“So that's months, maybe years down the line. But ultimately, that has always been my goal with young players. Right now, he's nowhere near his ceiling, and that's the most important thing.”
