Shrewsbury’s first league fixture of the season is a repeat of last season’s first away fixture with a trip to Birkenhead, where they hope to avoid a similar result.
Andy Crosby’s Rovers started the 2025-26 season well and came into the game looking for their first win, which looked likely following goals from Taylan Harris and new Salop summer signing Josh Davison in the first half, before Will Boyle’s two yellow cards in the space of a minute killed the game for the The Shrews. Goals from subs Omari Patrick and Kristian Dennis piled on the misery.
After that game, The Super Whites only won eight of their next 38 games, where a trip to the meadow beckoned. Following the sacking of Crosby, Pete Wild took the helm and faced a new-look Shrewsbury with Gavin Cowan in charge, where Sam Stubbs scored the only goal of the game as Salop leap-frogged the Merseyside team in the table.
Darrell Clarke has since replaced Wild in the dugout and will be hoping for a better finish than last season’s 21st place, saved on the final day of the season.

Former central midfielder Darrell Clarke brings a wealth of non-league and EFL experience to the Tranmere touchline, with a number of play-off final wins under his belt.
He started his playing career at boyhood club Mansfield, before spending six seasons at Hartlepool United. After three loan spells at clubs in the EFL, Clarke left the Pools for then Conference side Salisbury City, where he eventually became player-manager following the departure of then gaffer Tommy Widdrington to Southend United.
He secured two promotions before achieving back-to-back promotion success with Bristol Rovers, restoring their Football League status and guiding them to League One. Further success followed at Port Vale, where he masterminded promotion via the League Two play-offs. After recent stints at Cheltenham, Barnsley and a return to The Gas, Clarke is hoping to make a big impression at Prenton Park.
His style of pragmatic, adaptable football favours a squad of versatile players, whilst favouring high-intensity direct play supported by solid, organised defending.

Harrison Male:
A product of Leeds United’s academy, keeper Male is an exciting addition at Prenton Park this Summer. He gained valuable senior experience through loan spells across the non-league game, before establishing himself at Worthing, helping the club win promotion and reach the National League South play-offs. Male made his presence known as a solid first choice at Dorking Wanderers, playing every competitive match during the 2023-24 season and completing a rare clean sweep of the club’s player awards. After moving to York City in 2024,
Male achieved 38 clean sheets in his following two seasons with The Minstermen, before the expiration of his contract at the end of June this year. After attracting interest across the EFL, the England C capped shot-stopper is a real coup for the Rovers.
Tom Ince:
The son of former England captain Paul, Tom Ince is renowned for his creativity, goalscoring threat, and technical quality from wide areas. After emerging from Liverpool’s academy, he became one of the Football League’s standout talents with Blackpool, winning the EFL Young Player of the Year award following an 18-goal Championship campaign. Successful spells with Derby County, Reading, Stoke City, and several Premier League clubs followed, amassing over 500 senior appearances. After reuniting with Clarke this summer, Ince will be looking to roll the back the years and solidify his place at the Birkenhead-based outfit.
Nathan Smith:
Nathan Smith is a highly dependable defender who initially rose through Port Vale’s academy, where he spent over a decade with the club, accumulating nearly 370 league appearances and playing a key role in two promotions from League Two. Known for his aerial strength, defensive leadership, and commitment, Smith twice won Port Vale’s Player of the Year award and later captained the side. Joining Tranmere Rovers in 2025, he quickly became a cornerstone of the defence, providing experience, composure, and leadership at the back.
Charlie Whitaker:
Charlie Whitaker initially began his youth career at Blackburn Rovers before signing for Everton, he rapidly progressed through the ranks, winning Everton’s Under-18 Player of the Season award and scoring regularly in Premier League 2 competition. After making his professional Football League debut with Notts County in 2025, the attacking midfielder joined Tranmere Rovers, where his versatility across the centre of the park made him a frightening prospect to opposition back lines. With 15 goal involvements last season, he has already hit the back of the net once in the Carabao cup and is looking to bring the goals in the current league season.
Will Vaulks:
Welsh midfielder Will Vaulks is looking to start his league season on a high after returning to his boyhood club after 13 years away. Beginning his career with Rovers’ youth system before progressing through non-league football, he enjoyed a successful spell at Falkirk and later became a key figure for Rotherham United, helping secure promotion to the Championship. His experience continued with Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday, and Oxford United, while also earning seven senior caps for Wales. Vaulks brings a wealth of EFL experience, along with his energy, leadership, long-range shooting, and trademark long throw-ins.
