Memorial Applause

Throughout each season, we are informed of the passing of many Shrewsbury Town supporters, as well as former players, managers and club officials.

We understand the important role the football club plays within our community and in the lives of so many families. For those who have lost someone dear to them, having the role that Shrewsbury Town played in their loved one’s life acknowledged can be incredibly important.

Ahead of our first match of the season, we have received 11 separate requests from supporters wishing to remember loved ones who have sadly passed away. We would firstly like to extend our sincere condolences to everyone who has lost a family member, friend or fellow supporter.

Many of the messages received by the club are accompanied by requests for a tribute to be paid on a matchday, such as a minute’s applause or silence. While we would dearly love to accommodate every request, the volume of requests we receive means that, regrettably, this is not sustainable or practical throughout the season.

We have therefore, after careful consideration, taken the decision to introduce a dedicated collective memorial fixture each season, providing an opportunity for the whole football club and our supporters to come together to remember those connected with Shrewsbury Town and our wider community who are no longer with us.

Our New Year fixture will serve as the first dedicated memorial fixture of the season, remembering those who have sadly passed away during the previous year. This will include a collective memorial applause, with the names of those being remembered displayed on the stadium scoreboard.

A further memorial applause will take place at our final home match of the season, providing another opportunity for supporters to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of those we have lost.

Supporters wishing to have a loved one remembered as part of these memorial fixtures are invited to submit their requests to media@shrewsburytown.co.uk.

The club does, however, reserve the right to make alternative arrangements in response to individual requests where appropriate.

We appreciate that this decision may be disappointing for some families, and we want to stress that it is not a reflection on the importance of any individual request. It is simply the fairest and most sustainable way for us to ensure that those who have passed away are remembered, their contribution to our community recognised, and their lives celebrated by the whole football club.

For clarity, the 55th-minute and 59th-minute applauses that have already been organised for tomorrow’s fixture will go ahead as planned and will be honoured by the club.

We thank all supporters for their understanding and, above all, extend our deepest sympathies to everyone who has lost someone close to them.

Shrewsbury Town will always be more than a football club. We are a community, and we will continue to remember those who have been part of it.
