Match Report | Fleetwood 4-0 Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the second round stage after a disappointing defeat to Fleetwood Town at Highbury Stadium.

The home side took the lead within the first eight minutes after Will Boyle turned a cross into his own net.

Town began to dominate the game but Ched Evans extended the lead by the break through two quick-fire goals.

In a second half of few chances, Will Davies added to Fleetwood's tally with a goal in added time.

Will Brook started in-between the sticks with Luca Hoole, Boyle and Josh Ruffels making up the back three.

The two changes came in the form of Isaac England and Jay Turner-Cooke, who began in the middle of the park - Arkell Jude-Boyd and Kevin Berkoe flanked them.

Isaac Fletcher tucked in behind the front two of Josh Davison and Joe Gbodé.

The hosts began in the 3-5-2 formation as captain Evans lined-up top alongside Aaron Loupalo-Bi.

From right to left, Lewis McCann, Crispin McLean, Harrison Neal, Mark Helm and Danny Andrew made up the five behind the attacking duo.

In front of goalkeeper Jay Lynch sat the back three of Shaun Rooney, Rhys Bennett and Finley Potter.

Fleetwood created their first chance of the game in the first 60 seconds - McLean's early snapshot rolled wide of the goal.

However, the home side would only have to wait until the eighth minute to find the breakthrough. A dangerous cross into the penalty area was turned into the back of the net by the unfortunate Boyle.

Following the goal, Town began to dominate the ball and carve out some opportunities of their own,.

Gbodé first hit the side-netting with a low drive before Jude-Boyd's long-range attempt rose over the crossbar.

With the visitors' second corner of the contest, Turner-Cooke's delivery was diverted wide of the mark by the head of Ruffels.

Berkoe was causing trouble down the left-hand side and managed to steal the ball back in a dangerous position before sending a low cross into the penalty area. It found Fletcher unmarked at the penalty spot but the midfielder's effort was straight at Lynch.

Despite Salop being on top of proceedings, the home side found a second goal just before the hour mark. Helm's looping cross found Evans in the area, and the striker sent his header back across goal and beyond Brook.

A third for Fleetwood would follow in the 35th minute. Another Neal cross just evaded Ruffels before falling to the feet of Evans who made no mistake from ten-yards out.

Changes were made for both sides at the break with Evans being replaced by Will Davis for the hosts. For Shrewsbury, Jude-Boyd and Fletcher made way for Tom Anderson and Tom Sang.

The second period failed to spark into life early on - the only notable moments, before the hour mark, coming in the form of Neal and Gbodé being shown yellow cards.

England had the first two attempts of the half; seeing long-range efforts first curl wide of the mark before a second had to be saved by Lynch.

Fellow midfielder Turner-Cooke let fly from range a few minutes later, with his shot taking a deflection and landing on the roof of the net.

With the game ticking into second half added time, substitute Davies added a fourth with a low drive that beat Brook and found the bottom corner.
