Match Report | Shrewsbury 1-0 Salford

Captain Will Boyle was on target as Shrewsbury secured a deserved win over Salford.

The skipper netted in the 74th minute to see Salop secure their first league win of the 2026/27 campaign.

In truth, Gavin Cowan's side could have won by a greater margin with Isaac Fletcher firing inches over and a host of players seeing shots blocked thanks to some excellent last-ditch defending from the visitors.

Salford did have one or two moments with Macauley Langstaff and Ade Oluwo going close.

But at a passionate Croud Meadow, it was Town who deservedly claimed the three points.

Boss Cowan opted for a 3-5-2 formation for the clash against Peter Cklamovski’s side.

It saw Will Brook start in goal with Tom Anderson, Will Boyle and Josh Ruffels making up the back three.

Luca Hoole and Kevin Berkoe were at wing-back with Will Gray, Tom Sang and Jay Turner-Cooke in the middle of the park.

Isaac Fletcher and Josh Davison were the front two.

Salford lined up in a 4-4-2 system with ex-Salop man Dan Udoh partnered by Macaulay Langstaff in attack.

It was Shrewsbury who flew out the blocks at the Croud Meadow with the Cowan’s men putting the visitors under heavy pressure right from the off.

Salop almost opened the scoring inside two minutes with Sang sending a free-kick to the back post which Anderson nodded across goal and into the danger area.

And that was met by Fletcher who sent a half-volley inches over the bar.

In the sixth minute, another Sang delivery was met by Hoole who saw a header claimed by keeper Will Norris.

And in-between those chances, Town had a legitimate shout for a penalty with Davison manhandled in the box only for the referee to wave play on.

Salford had their first chance in the 20th minute when Langstaff jinked past two challenges before firing wide from the edge of the box.

After what was a frantic start, the game settled down from that point.

But it sprung to life again in added on time with Salford threatening again when a long – ball forward got Langstaff in on goal.

He managed to lift the ball over the top of Brook – but Boyle had read the danger and was able to head clear the striker’s effort on the goal line.

Salop then went up the other end with only some brilliant last-ditch defending preventing them from going ahead.

Following a corner, there was a huge goal-mouth scramble with Boyle, Fletcher and Sang all seeing efforts blocked.

Salford put Town under pressure during the open stages of the second half without creating anything of note.

Cowan then made his first change with around 20 minutes to go - with Joe Gbode replacing Turner-Cooke in a move that saw Fletcher drop deeper into midfield.

Overall, though, the second half had been a stalemate - with the two teams cancelling each other out.

That was until Salop broke the deadlock in the 74th minute.

When it came it was scrappy with Town sending the ball back into the box in the second phase following a corner.

But after a scramble, Boyle managed to latch onto it and fire into the corner.

Salford immediately went in search of an equaliser with Ade Oluwo nodding over from a corner.

But from that point, Salop saw out the match superbly to secure a deserved win.
