Shrewsbury Town and Radcliffe played out a goalless draw on the Isle of Man in a pre-season friendly - with the National League North side going onto win 4-2 on penalties.

Gavin Cowan opted for 3-4-1-2 formation for the first-half at Ballacloan with new recruit Sam Proctor starting in goal.

Isaac Lee, Will Boyle and youngster Ollie Hall made up the back three with Tom Sang starting at right wing-back and Byron Pendleton on the left.

Will Gray and Jay Turner-Cooke were deployed in central midfield with Isaac Fletcher more advanced in the number 10 role.

Josh Davison and academy prospect Jay Snook were the front two.

Shrewsbury started brightly and fashioned the first opening inside four minutes. Isaac Lee and Byron Pendleton combined well down the left before finding Isaac Fletcher on the edge of the area, but the midfielder's curling effort drifted narrowly wide of the target.

Tom Sang then began to make his presence felt from the right flank, delivering a dangerous cross that was turned behind for a corner before Pendleton again burst to the byline moments later, only to see his cross cleared by the Radcliffe defence.

The hosts gradually worked their way into the contest and came closest to breaking the deadlock on 18 minutes. Aeoye skipped into the penalty area, cut inside his marker and watched his curling effort crash back off the crossbar.

Radcliffe continued to threaten, with McCarthy firing wide from distance before Sam Proctor was called into action just before the half-hour mark, producing a smart save to keep out Maynard's effort from inside the box.

Salop responded well and looked dangerous from set pieces, with Sang delivering a pair of inviting corners that caused problems for the home defence, Turner-Cook then went close from distance.

Radcliffe, though, stood firm to ensure the sides went into the break level at 0-0.

Boss Cowan made eight changes at the interval, with Will Brook replacing Proctor in goal.

Isaac Lee, Sam Stubbs and Josh Ruffels lined up in the back three, while Arkell Jude-Boyd took up the right wing-back position. Pendleton remained on the left, with Jack Price and Isaac England anchoring midfield.

Fletcher remained in the 10 just behind the strike partnership of George Lloyd and Joe Gbode as Salop lined up for the second half.

Salop began the second half on the front foot and came within inches of taking the lead after 55 minutes. Joe Gbode rose highest inside the penalty area to meet a cross, but his close-range header drifted just over the crossbar.

Three minutes later, Town threatened again when Isaac Fletcher's well-struck free-kick forced the Radcliffe goalkeeper into a smart low save to push the effort away from danger.

Gavin Cowan then made a triple substitution just after the hour mark, introducing Jevel Thompson-McKenzie, Reuben Falding and Ollie Hall in place of Fletcher, Byron Pendleton and Isaac Lee.

And Thompson-McKenzie almost made an immediate impact - with the academy midfielder driving purposefully down the flank before fizzing a dangerous low cross across goal, but the Radcliffe defence reacted well to clear the danger.

Town continued to push with Jude-Boyd cutting in from the flank before seeing a shot blocked.

Radcliffe almost won it as the clock ticked towards the 90 minute mark with Rick Smith failing to connect properly with a close-range header.

That ensured the match went to penalties - which Radcliffe won 4-2.
